Start the summer safely with the RiverView Bike Safety Rodeo for children ages 5 to 12, scheduled for Thursday, June 24th from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the Crookston High School parking lot. The “Helmets for Health” bike safety program, sponsored by RiverView Health and the Crookston Police Department, is also ramping up for another summer season.
The bike rodeo will focus on teaching children safe handling of a two-wheel bicycle. The rodeo allows kids an opportunity to demonstrate and improve their skills on a training course. This year’s rodeo will also feature ambulance and fire truck tours, free popcorn and beverages, and prize drawings. Children are encouraged to wear helmets and must be accompanied by an adult.
The “Helmets for Health” program will continue throughout the summer with the Crookston Police Department distributing coupons for a free ice cream cone to children they see displaying proper bicycle safety techniques. This includes wearing a well-fitting bicycle helmet, using proper hand signals, riding on the right side of the street and being courteous to others.
When the coupons are redeemed, children will be asked to put their name and phone number on the back of the coupon, in order to qualify for a drawing for a brand new bicycle to be given away at next year’s bike rodeo.
